Movies were like a textbook of fashion for me when I was a kid. I would imitate the styles of the boys from Goonies, or I would try on an orange hunting jacket like my idol River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho. I actually appreciate older Japanese movies as well, such as Battles Without Honor and Humanity; I’d try and dress like the gangsters (laughs). It was about 20 years ago when I saw The Royal Tenenbaums, and I thought the red sweats that Ben Stiller wore as Chas was damn cool. I’ve actually been to adidas to buy a similar set. So, this spring when I bought the red track suits from Needles, The Royal Tenenbaums was not on my mind but maybe I was subconsciously comparing myself, now a parent, to Chas. By the way, I indeed have dressed my daughter in the same red adidas sweats set worn by Chas’s kids, and I in the Needles’, and we went out matching like that (laughs).
