ティム・バートンはお気に入りの映画監督のひとりで、高校生のときに『シザーハンズ』と『ナイトメアー・ビフォア・クリスマス』を観て好きになりました。『ビートルジュース』を知ったのも同じ頃。「彼の初期の作品はどういう感じなんだろう？」って、レンタルビデオ屋さんで何気なく借りてみたんです。ＣＧが今ほど発達していなかった時代の作品なので、アナログな技術がまだたくさん使われていて、その映像が逆に新鮮だったのと、あとはなんといっても主人公のビートルジュースが着ていたストライプのセットアップですよね。すごくかわいくて、「私もいつか、あんな一張羅を着てみたい！」ってずっと記憶の片隅に残っていました。その夢が実現したのは、きゃりーぱみゅぱみゅとしてデビューして、3rｄシングルの「ファッションモンスター」をリリースしたとき。曲を聴いて、すぐにＭＶでビートルジュースみたいな衣装を着るアイデアが浮かんだんです。ただ、そのままだとコスプレみたいになってつまらないので、黒と白のストライプのドレスに血しぶきをイメージした赤いチュールをつけて、私の大好きな“グロカワ”風にアレンジしてみました。

Movies are a mirror of the times and have been closely tied to fashion. Just as there are movies, where we like the story and the actors so much, that we watch again and again.There are also movies with costumes unforgettably fascinating. Nepenthes is keen to know of the works that became fashion inspirations to the visionaries.In this issue, we invited 10 creators to reveal and reminisce their encounter with movies and fashion.
Tim Burton is one of my favorite filmmakers, and I fell in love with him when I saw Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas in high school. I came to discover Beetlejuice around the same time, because I was curious of Burton’s earlier works, and I just casually rented it at a video rental store. It was made at a time when CGI was not as advanced as it is now, so a lot of the analog technology was still being used, which was conversely refreshing. And then, of course, there was the striped setup worn by the main character Beetlejuice. It was so cute that I had always thought in the back of my mind “Someday, I want to wear a good suit like that!” My dream was fulfilled when I debuted as Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and released my third single, “Fashion Monster”. The idea of Beetlejuice-inspired costume for the music video immediately came to me. But I did not want it to feel cosplay, so I chose a black and white striped dress with red tulle to resemble blood splatter; a lovely, grotesque look that I adore.
