映画は時代を写す鏡であり、ファッションの歴史とも深く結びついてきた。ストーリーや役者が好きで何度も観返す作品があるように、登場人物たちの衣装に魅せられて、ずっと忘れられない作品もある。NEPENTHESが今、気になるあの人は、どんな映画からファッションのヒントを得てきたのだろうか。10人のクリエイターが語る、映画とファッションの思い出。

日本からＮＹに移り住んだばかりの頃、英語に耳を慣らすために、毎日のように映画を観ていました。イースト・ヴィレッジに「Kim’s Video & Music」という伝説的なビデオ屋があって、そこでレンタルしたり、友達と好きな映画のVHＳを貸し借りしたり。ジム・ジャームッシュの作品を初めて観たのも、ちょうどその頃で。以前から家の近所で、彼をちょくちょく見かけてはいたんです。ただ、そのときはまだ何者か知らなくて、知り合いに「あの背が高くて白髪の人は誰？」って聞いたら映画監督だと教えられて。それで興味がわいて、『ストレンジャー・ザン・パラダイス』を観たんです。ストーリーがおもしろかったかといわれたら微妙だったけど（笑）、サウンドトラックと登場人物たちのファッションはとても自分好みでした。特にカッコよかったのが、リチャード・エドソン演じるエディの、ツバの短い中折れ帽にアーガイル柄のモヘアカーディガンを合わせたスタイリング。それから十数年後、僕が〈NEEDLES〉のモヘアカーディガンに一目惚れしたのは、柄や形がよかったのはもちろん、エディのあの着こなしを思い出したからでもありました。

Movies are a mirror of the times and have been closely tied to fashion. Just as there are movies, where we like the story and the actors so much, that we watch again and again. There are also movies with costumes unforgettably fascinating. Nepenthes is keen to know of the works that became fashion inspirations to the visionaries. In this issue, we invited 10 creators to reveal and reminisce their encounter with movies and fashion.
I had just moved to New York from Japan; I watched movies almost every day to get my ears used to hearing English. There was a legendary video store in East Village, Kim’s Video & Music, where I went to rent, or my friends and I exchanged VHSs. It was right around that time I saw my first Jim Jarmusch film. I had seen him around my neighborhood often. But I was unaware of who he was at the time, so I asked a friend “Who is that tall guy with the silver hair?”, and I found out he was a film director. That had piqued my interest, so I watched Stranger than Paradise. If you ask me whether the story was interesting, I’m not sure (laughs), but it was the soundtrack and the fashion of the characters that was supreme. What was especially cool was the styling of Eddie, portrayed by Richard Edson, with his short-brimmed fedora and argyle-patterned mohair cardigan. More than ten years later is when I instantly fell in love with a mohair cardigan from Needles. Its great pattern and fit are a given, but it also allowed me to relive Eddie’s styling as well.
