  • Kohei Chiba began surfing after visiting Hawaii during Japan’s early surf culture years and pondered, “how can I continue surfing for a lifetime?” His answer came in the form of a surfboard workshop he founded in 1982 in the town of Shishikui (now a part of Kaiyo) in Tokushima Prefecture. Since then, he has been a leading figure in the scene, both as a surfer and a surfboard shaper.
  • T“When I first rode a wave, the feeling was so enjoyable, something I’d never experienced elsewhere. The waves move, and so do people. It was strange yet incredibly fun. I was around 18 then. After returning from Hawaii, I lived in Chigasaki and surfed across Japan, but Shikoku, with its diverse breaks in the waves, was the best environment for making and testing surfboards.”
  • In the early ‘80s, there were almost no surfboards suitable for Japanese waves. Chiba began so he can “eventually create handmade surfboards for those who, like [him], found surfing”. To distribute his original boards, he opened a shop in Matsuyamachi, Osaka. Until he closed the store in 2015, he lived a life going back and forth between his shop and workshop for over 30 years, forming a deep connection with Osaka.
  • “I lived a life where I spend three days a week in Osaka and four days in Shikoku. When I was in Osaka, I couldn’t surf. So, when it got too tough, I’d go to Koshien and windsurf instead.”

  • Chiba’s life has always been with the waves. In winter, he would regularly head to the North Shore, and in the rainy season, he embarks on surf trip to countries that knows no such weather. In a sense, he has spent over half a century living by the waves and traveling to find them. However, he chose to open a shop in Osaka, a city seemingly distant from the waters, because he “loved the city and the fashion”. Chiba, who has worn many high-end brands, first encountered NEPENTHES about 20 years ago.
  • “My friend and stylist Takashi Kumagai invited me to check NEPENTHES TOKYO out. I mentioned my small size and difficulty finding clothes that fit, and he told me, ‘These ENGINEERED GARMENTS pants will definitely fit.’”

  • Although the initial encounter was in Tokyo, as NEPENTHES OSAKA opened in a familiar city, Chiba began to visit more frequently. Half of his lifestyle is spent in beach sandals, shorts, and a t-shirt. His favorite work pants from ENGINEERED GARMENTS are an extension of this laidback, daily wear. Conversely, for casual parties and slightly dressier occasions, he often wears a suit from the same brand. Whether for work or leisure, what is it about these items that make them so appealing?
  • “ENGINEERED GARMENTS makes great staples. It never gets boring, no matter how long you wear it, and it offers a lot of freedom in mixing and matching. Plus, it’s so comfortable. Even in a suit, I feel like I can lie down. That is one great appeal.”
  • He is all in on what he loves. When asked about his long-time wear, Chiba answered, “The clothes from ENGINEERED GARMENTS carries a sense of dreams”.
  • “I’ve never met the designer myself. So, it’s really just my impression, but the clothes seem to be made by someone who loves fashion and has a wonderful heart. You can see it in the garment.”
  • “Because I like it, it’s interesting, it’s fun, and it brings joy” is his reason to ride all the way. Chiba’s direct and sincere philosophy shapes both his surfing and fashion.
