テリア特有の黒くて大きな鼻に小さな目をした、 この顔つきが好きなんです。 飽きずにずっと見ていられますね （笑）。 パーシーの前も2匹のテリアと暮らしていたんです。 黒いスコッチ・テリアという犬種で、 名前はジジとカデ。 カデは長生きをしてくれて、 パーシーとも2年くらい一緒に暮らしていました。
I love his very terrier-like face with a big black nose and small eyes. I can look at it forever (laughs). I had two black Scottish terriers before Percy. One of them lived a quite long life and spent his last few years with Percy.

僕が地元で一番気に入っている公園がこの真駒内公園。 自宅から車で15分くらいです。 パーシーを連れて行くと、 嬉しそうにずっと尻尾は上がりっぱなし。 犬を連れてきている方が多く、 色んな犬に挨拶できて楽しそうにしています。 今ではたくさんの犬友もできて、 家族でいつも良い時間を過ごせる場所です。
Makomanai is my favorite local park. It’s about 15 minutes by car from home. Percy looks so happy with his tail up when we come here. We’ve met many fellow dog lovers, and Percy seems happy hanging out with his canine friends. We love our family time here.

犬にとって北海道はとても過ごしやすい土地だと思います。 この公園以外にも、 旭山記念公園、 円山公園、 中島公園など、 大きな公園がたくさんあって自然も身近にあるので、 パーシーは毎日十分満足のいく運動ができていると思います。 僕の運動不足も一緒に解消したいのですが、 なかなかそっちの方は （笑）。
I think Hokkaido is a perfect place for dogs. It has many large parks like this one and is also surrounded by nature, so Percy can get enough exercise every day. I wish I could get fit like him (laughs).

犬との生活は四半世紀を超えたわけですが、 実はこれまでオスしか飼ったことがないんです。 なんか、 オスの無邪気でガムシャラなところがたまらなく好きなんですよね。 ときに甘えん坊だったり、 同じオスとして気持ちが分かる気もします。 女の子が家にいるより、 気を遣わず気楽に付き合える感じというか （笑）。
I’ve been living with dogs for over 25 years, but only ever had male dogs. I like the innocent and reckless characters of male dogs. Their naughty yet vulnerable nature does resonate with me as a male.

初めてうちに来たときの写真。 8頭くらい生まれたうちの一番大きな子でした。 初日は家の中をあちこち探検してました。

遊び疲れて昼寝中。 写真のように最初の頃は体全体が黒かったんですが、 今は茶色が増えて目の周りが白くなりました。

積丹の海を見つめるパーシー。 晩春の積丹は暑すぎず、 天気も良くて楽しかったなあ。 ウニ丼も美味しかった （笑）。

桜の季節は毎年写真を撮ってもらっていて、 これは7歳のとき。 あっという間に散ってしまうからタイミングが大事です。

イヤークリーナーと歯磨きグッズ。 毎日歯磨きをしてから寝るのが習慣。 歯磨き粉が美味しいのか、 積極的に磨かれています （笑）。
Ear and oral care tools. I brush his teeth before bed. He’s willing to do it probably because the toothpaste tastes good.

These coats are from Ruffwear and Wagwear and fits perfectly well. Percy wears them every winter.

シニア期に入って乗り降りしやすいように、 車高が高くない車にしました。 荷台はパーシー仕様。 夏場のケージには扇風機が必須です。
As Percy grew older, I bought a low-height car so it’s easier for him. The trunk is specially designed for him.
- 犬が初めて家族の一員になったのは、僕が小学生の頃でした。兄弟みんなで親に犬が欲しいとねだっていたら、ある日父親が柴犬を買ってきてくれたんです。嬉しかったですね。当時はペットというより番犬的な飼い方で、家の横に作った犬小屋で飼っていました。実家は銭湯をやっていたんですが、共働きで子供たちをあまりかまってあげられないというのもきっとあったんだと思います。実家を出てからも、25年前に上京して妻と二人で生活するようになってから、ずっと犬と一緒に暮らしています。このパーシーはオスで、テリアのなかで最も大型のエアデール・テリアという犬種。以前からずっと大型犬との生活に憧れがあったんですが、北海道に移住して札幌に今の家を建てたことでそれが現実になりました。英国原産の犬種なので、名前はイギリスにちなんだものにしようと考えて、自分たちが好きなパンク・ロックバンド「シャム69」のジミー・パーシーから名付けました（スペルはあえて変えています）。基本的に夏場は毎朝5時に起きて、暑くならないうちに家を出て1時間くらい散歩。帰ってきて、足を洗って乾かしてやって、一緒に朝食。仕事帰りにはときどき夜の散歩に合流して一緒に帰ったりしてます。帰宅したら一緒に夕飯。生活はもっぱら犬が主軸ですね（笑）。パーシーは家ではお気に入りの場所で寝ていることが多くて、僕も近くで横になってテレビを観たりしています。犬以外のペットというのは飼ったことがないですね。僕にとって犬は理屈抜きに心が安らぐ、いつも寄り添っているかけがえのない存在です。パーシーは身体もそうですが、その存在感が僕のなかでとてつもなく大きくて、間違いなく今の自分にとっての生きがい。人間と比べたらうんと短い「犬生」だから、一日一日を大事にしてやらないとなと思ってます。11歳を迎えた今、その思いはいっそう強くなるばかりで、一緒にいる時間を大切に過ごしています。
- I got my first puppy when I was in elementary school. One day my father brought a Shiba home because my brothers and I kept begging for a dog. I was so happy. Since moving to Tokyo with my wife 25 years ago, I’ve always been with a dog. This is Percy, an Airedale terrier, the largest of terriers. My dream of a life with a large breed dog finally came true when I moved to Hokkaido and built my current house in Sapporo. We wanted to give him a name related to the U.K. because the Airedale originated there. So, he was named after Jimmy Pursey, the frontman of our favorite English punk rock band Sham 69, but with a different spelling. In summertime, I wake up at 5AM and take him for an hour walk before it gets too hot. We return home, I wash and dry his feet and have breakfast together. I sometimes join his evening walk after work and go home together. And then we have dinner. Our life is always dog-centered (laughs). Percy spends most of his time sleeping in his favorite spot at home, so I often watch TV while lying near him. I’ve never had other animals as pets. Dogs mean so much to me as they always bring me calmness. Percy is big not just in size, but also in terms of importance. He’s what makes my life worth living. Because a canine’s life is much shorter than humans, I want to make each of his day meaningful. As he turned eleven this year, I think that more than ever. I treasure every moment with him.
