Tengenji-bashi

I still hesitate to go to something like local-only places in the central Tokyo, such as Tengenji-bashi in Hiroo and Jakuzure in Meguro. During my early career, I sometimes had chances to take a taxi with my senior actors. It sounded so cool when they explained their destination to a taxi driver, saying, for example, “Hey driver, please go to blah-blah-blah via Jakuzure(local name of the road)” (laughs). Their expressions like this sounded like the locals to me.

In front of Aoyama Gakuin University

For a movie called “Nantonaku Crystal,” we had a shooting on a pedestrian bridge in front of Aoyama Gakuin University. My role was one of many students, so there was not a big difference from extras. But I was just too proud of myself to talk to other young actors (laughs). I just wanted to distinguish myself from others. Such memories from my very early days in Tokyo come to my mind whenever passing by the university. It’s a little embarrassing, though.

Hobson's in Nishiazabu

During the bubble economy, I heard that show biz people liked to go to Hobson’s after having BBQ dinner at Jojo-en restaurant in Nishiazabu late at night. But I was not one of them at that time. As a big fan of soul music, I also wanted to go to trendy discos in Nishiazabu and Roppongi, but those areas looked too chic for me to visit. So, I frequented a café in Shimokitazawa instead, because the place always played soul tunes. There I eagerly jotted down names of songs that I didn’t know, while sipping Coke (laughs).

Cigar Bar

I still cannot go to bars without company. It’s difficult for me to have a witty chat with a bartender, because I always feel nervous there. I have visited a cigar bar just once in my life. And I’ve never been in classy sushi restaurants in Tokyo by myself. Places with a glitteringly polished wooden counter and without a glass sushi display are too posh for me, I think (laughs).
