- 〈SOUTH2 WEST8〉のチームと出会ってまず印象的だったのは、そのプロダクトとブランドに誇りを持って働いているということでした。彼らと仕事をするということは、革新的かつスタイリッシュな最高峰のアウトドアウェアブランドと仕事をするということです。彼らはこのコラボレーションを通じて、アートをギャラリーの枠を飛び越えていくものとして捉えたのです。川を描いた絵を衣服に使用するというコンセプトは、川に立つ私たちの存在と周りの環境とを結びつけてくれるものです。つまり、絵画が衣服となり移動が可能になったことで、川を歩く人々の姿がその流れに溶け込んで見えるのです。
- 実際に仕上がったものを見て、着用してみてどのように思いましたか？
- 服は常に私にとって愛着のあるものです。長年着用できる衣類が好きで、〈SOUTH2 WEST8〉に出会うまでアウトドア用の衣料品には何千ドルも費やしてきました。〈SOUTH2 WEST8〉のウェアは、腰までの深さの渓流でも、釣り人が求めるスムーズな操作性を実現してくれています。まるで釣りにおけるテンカラのように、すべての非効率的なデザインは取り除かれてシンプル。ジャケットを着るたびに、快適な肌触り、使いやすいポケット、そして生涯の冒険を共にしてくれる絶対的な耐候性素材に驚かされます。彼らのデザイン哲学は「形は機能から生まれるもの」であり、それに加え、プライドと品質を重視した作りは、業界の他のどのブランドよりもクラフトマンシップが高いと感じます。
- フライフィッシングの魅力を教えてください。
- フライフィッシングは、私たちには理解できるはずもない水のなかの世界で、そこに住む生物を騙すというチャレンジであり、その経験は世界の謎を解き明かすことにもつながるのです。魚がドライフライ（毛バリ）を咥え、そこに水が飛び散るのを見るのは堪らない瞬間です。あの時の驚きと衝撃は忘れられません。

- フライキャスト・ペインティングを始めたきっかけを教えてください。
- フライキャスト・ペインティングは、幼い頃にフライフィッシングを経験したことと、大学まで芸術を追求したことから生まれたものです。ある日、小川を泳ぐ鱒を油絵で描いていたとき、フライロッドを使ってその絵を描くというアイデアが浮かんできて、フライロッドの先に靴下を結んで裏庭に設置したキャンバスに打ち始めたのです。そして、川は色の滲みであり、絵画は主題に沿った色の滲みなんだという考えから、次はこの技法で川を描いてみようと。「水」という物質で、主題、技法、絵具の溶剤、全てが重なる「水」を表現しようと思いました。
- 手作りの筆（フライブラシ）を使って、正確な釣りのキャスティング技術が必要なこの手法は、とても体力が必要だし純粋に難しそうに見えます。あなたがこの手法を選んだ理由とその面白さはどんなところでしょうか？
- フライロッドを使って絵を描くという行為は、フライフィッシングと同じようにユニークな（そして速度に頼る）方法でマーク（跡）をつけ、水を描き、色や形を創り上げるチャレンジです。私はこの技法を「フライキャスト・ペインティング」と呼んでいます。絵の具を付けるフライブラシは、川を歩いて注意深く観察しながら制作しています。マークは水中のさまざまな状況を表し、丸みを帯びた大きな形は石ころや大きな岩を表し、アメーバ状の線は水の流れを表すように作ります。３×４フィートの絵は４時間から６時間、大きな絵は一日中かかることも。屋内スタジオの場合だと、数日というスパンで巨大な絵が完成します。絵を見るだけで、川にいるのと同じくらいエキサイティングな気持ちが沸くように心がけています。
- フライフィッシャーという立場から、〈SOUTH2 WEST8〉がコンセプトにしているテンカラについてどう捉えていますか？アメリカでテンカラはどのように受け入れられているのでしょうか？
- テンカラは従来のフライフィッシングよりも、屋外にいるという瞑想効果と水面への集中度をより早く得られると思います。そして、フライフィッシングと比較して獲物との距離が短いことから、獲物をストーキングするケースが多いのですが、私はそれが大好きなんです。アメリカではまだほとんどの人がテンカラを知らないというのが実情です。知っている人たちについても、何千ドルも投資したうえで伝統的なフライフィッシングをやっていて頭が固い人たちが多いため、あまりに頑固で新しいことを取り入れることができないのです。テンカラでいかに効果的に多くの魚を釣ることができるかを知ってもらえば、アメリカに巨大なマーケットが生まれるはずです。
- あなたは川をモチーフに絵画を制作しています。その理由を教えてください。
- 水の上にいることに魅力を感じるからです。目の前にある水面に集中し、流れに目を向ける構図は、捕食者の視点に立つ行為です。フライキャストペインティングという手法の利点はその速度にあり、激しく流れる水流は自然とフライロッドの動きとマッチするんです。
- 今後の創作活動について、決まっていることや取り組んでいきたいことなどあれば教えてください。
- 私がこの人生で達成したい目標は、世界中で様々な川を描くことです。その川にしかない様々なラインやビジョンというものが数多く存在し、フライブラシ（写真下）はそれを表現するユニークなマークを創作するために制作しています。〈SOUTH2 WEST8〉の２０周年をお祝いしに、６月には札幌を訪れたいと思っています。そして北海道の川をぜひ描きたいと思っています。

- How was the collaboration with SOUTH2 WEST8 as an experience for you?
- Upon meeting the people that are SOUTH2 WEST8, the first thing is to take note of is the amount of pride they have in working with their products and company. Working with them is working with the premier outdoor clothing company that is stylish as it is innovative. In collaborating, they have recognized the art to be tested beyond the gallery space. The concept of having a stream design on the clothing is to connect our presence on a stream with the surrounding environment. Thus, when seen on the rivers, the melding of human form flows into the stream as the paintings have become mobile.
- What were your thoughts on the actual products, and after trying them on?
- Clothing has always been a passion for me. Before meeting SOUTH2 WEST8, I had spent thousands of dollars on clothing for the outdoors. SOUTH2 WEST8 is as smooth an operation a fisherman could ask for on a stream in waist deep water. Like tenkara fishing, all inefficient designs have been taken out of the equation. Every time I put on the jacket I marvel at the comfortable feel, accessible pockets, and absolute weatherproof material that will see a lifetime of adventure. Form follows function with their design philosophy, and to couple that up with pride and quality put into its construction, elevates its craftsmanship over any other brand in the industry.
- Please tell us about the beauty of fly fishing.
- Fly fishing is the challenge of deceiving a creature that we have no business understanding within their world of water, and experience gained from it is unlocking the mysteries of the world. Fly fishing has always had an appeal when that water splashed after a dry fly from like, out of nowhere. There was such a surprise and shock in that moment I cannot forget.
- How did you get started in fly cast painting?
- Fly cast painting came about from fly fishing at a very young age and pursuing the arts through college. I was oil painting trout swimming in the streams and when the idea to paint with a fly rod came about, I tied a sock to the end of a fly rod and began hitting a canvas in the back yard. The next revelation was to paint a river with this technique, as the idea of a river being a smear of color and a painting being a smear of color lined up with the subject, technique as water and doubles as a medium of paint, and the substance it is representing.
- This method, which required precise casting techniques using handmade brushes (fly), seems very strenuous and genuinely difficult. Please tell us your process of choosing this method, and what makes it interesting for you?
- Just like fly fishing, the act of painting with a fly rod is a challenge to paint water and translate the colors and shapes by a unique (and velocity dependent) means of making a mark. I call this technique “Fly Cast Painting”. Fly Brushes are tied and developed during the analysis of experiencing a river. The marks are tied to represent different situations in the water, with bigger rounded forms as cobbles and large stones, and more strings to show amebic lines as the flow of water. A 3x4 foot painting will take anywhere from four to six hours and larger paintings can take all day. If it is an indoor studio situation, monstrous paintings can be created over a span of days. What makes a river interesting is how I want the painting to read and try to make the intrigue of looking at the painting just as exciting as being on the water.

- From a standpoint of a fly-fisher, what are your thoughts on the tenkara concept of SOUTH2 WEST8? How is tenkara accepted in the US?
- Tenkara fishing puts the meditation of being outdoors and focused on water faster than conventional means of fly fishing. The challenge of stalking the prey is elevated by the relatively shortcomings of distance. I love it.How it is perceived in the US is that most folks aren’t aware of it. The folks that do know about it have usually invested thousands of dollars into more conventional means of fly fishing and are too stubborn to change with a narrow mindset. There is a huge market to be had in the United States when folks are brought along with how effective it can be to catch a lot of fish.
- You create paintings with river motifs. Please tell us why.
- I create paintings of rivers as the thought of being on the water is appealing to me. The composition of being focused on the immediate water, looking into the current is from a perspective of a predator. With fly cast painting, the advantage is in the means of velocity and the water rushing past relates to the style of movement that matches nature with a fly rod.
- Please share with us about your future creative activities, if any, that you have decided or would like to work on.
- Goals I would love to achieve in this life is to paint different rivers from around the world. The Fly Brush（Pictured above）development is a part of the process in creating the unique marks on a painting as there are a number of varying lines and visions to be seen as only different rivers can demonstrate. I am also looking forward to visiting Sapporo in June, for the 20th anniversary of SOUTH2 WEST8. There, I would like to paint the rivers of Hokkaido.
