STRAIGHTENER や Nothing's Carved In Stone では、強靭なグルーヴでバンド・アンサンブルの中核を担いながら観客の興奮を煽り、HHMMや名だたるミュージシャンとのセッションでは、多彩な奏法を駆使したスリリングかつクールなインプロビゼーション（即興演奏）で玄人ファンを唸らせる。

日向秀和さんのライブパフォーマンスを一度でも体験したなら、彼について語る際にたびたび使われるそんな形容が、決して誇張した表現ではないことがわかるだろう。多くのファンからカリスマティックな支持を集めている理由は、他にもある。ステージやInstagraｍで見せる、その個性的なファッションだ。 - 「自分にとってファッションは、ものすごくパワーを与えてくれるもの。たとえばステージに立つときは、必ずその日の気分やテンションに合った服を選んで着るようにしています。そうすることで、日向秀和から“ひなっち”というキャラクターになるスイッチが入るんですよね」
- 地元の町田に古着屋がたくさんあったこともあり、中学生の頃にファッションに目覚めたという日向さん。アメカジに始まり、ハードコア、ミクスチャーロック、ヒップホップと、そのときにハマった音楽やそれに付随するさまざまなカルチャーから影響を受けながら、既存のルールや流行に縛られない自由なスタイリングを楽しむようになっていった。
- 「だからNEPENTHESを好きになったのも、自分的には必然というか。NEPENTHESが作る服は、他にはないバランスやアウトプットでいろんなカルチャーがミックスされていると思うんですよ。２０年くらい前にツアー先のセレクトショップでたまたま出会ったんですが、それからもうずっと好きですね」

- 特にここ数年、プライベートで自身が中心となって登山チーム「オレンジバックパッカーズ」を結成し、本格的な登山を始めてからは、〈SOUTH2 WEST8〉を着る機会が格段に増えたという。
- 「以前から〈SOUTH2 WEST8〉のアイテムは持っていましたし、札幌のお店にも10年以上通っていますが、多い時には月に４回とか登山やキャンプをするようになってから、より自分のライフスタイルにそのアウトドアなコンセプトがバチッとハマった感じですね。〈SOUTH2 WEST8〉って機能性はフィールド仕様なのに、本気のアウトドアブランドは絶対に選ばない柄や色を使うじゃないですか。あの振り切っている感じが、ファッション好きとしてはすごくグッとくるんです」

- 最近では、自身がステージで愛用するイギリスの老舗アンプメーカー「ORANGE」とのコラボレーションでシグネイチャーモデルを制作する一方、アパレルブランド「bocco」を立ち上げてオリジナルウェアもリリースするなど、表現者としての幅を広げ続ける日向さん。それらの多くのプロダクトでは、名称やデザインにトレードマークである“極”の一文字が使われている。
- 「『頂点に達する』とか『完全にマスターする』といった意味を持つ“極”は、自分がもっとも大切にしているマインドを表す言葉。何事も極めるまで全力で追求し続けたいんですよね。音楽はもちろん、趣味の登山やファッションも。今回の撮影で初めてやったテンカラ釣りもめちゃくちゃ楽しかったので、すでに極めたくなっています（笑）」

ひなた・ひでかず：1976年12月4日生まれ、東京都出身。愛称はひなっち。2002年にART-SCHOOLでデビュー。その後、ZAZEN BOYSを経て、現在はSTRAIGHTENER、Nothing's Carved In Stoneなどのメンバーとして活躍する。また、米津玄師やTK from 凛として時雨、MIYAVIといったアーティストのスタジオ・ワークもこなす。近年ではドラマー松下マサナオとの即興ユニット、HHMMでも精力的に活動している。

Hidekazu Hinata has been playing for STRAIGHTENER and Nothing's Carved In Stone as a bassist. His powerful sound works as the foundation of the bands' music and excites the audience, while thrilling yet sophisticated improvisation he creates with a wide range of techniques impresses professional musicians.
He is often described as‘a bass hero who represents Japan's music scene’or‘a bass virtuoso,’but if you listen to him performing once, you can easily realize that it is not an exaggeration.
There is another reason he attracts many fans as a charismatic bassist. It is his very unique style he showcases on stage and in his Instagram posts. - “Fashion gives me tremendous power. Before playing on stage, I always wear clothes that suit my mood and vibe of the day. So that I can switch into a character, Hinatch, from Hidekazu Hinata.”
- Because there were many vintage clothing shops in his hometown, Machida, Hinata first became aware of fashion during junior high school. His style evolved with inspirations from music and culture he preferred, from the American Casual to hard-core punk to crossover rock to hip-hop, without being bound by conventional fashion rules and trends.
- “So, I was meant to be a fan of NEPENTHES. I think a number of cultures are uniquely mixed and expressed in clothes made by NEPENTHES. I happened to find them about 20 years ago at a concept shop in a city I visited for a tour, and have been a fan since then.”
- He said he recently wears SOUTH2 WEST8 clothes more often after voluntarily forming mountain climbing team Orange Backpackers several years ago to enjoy serious trekking.
- “I owned some SOUTH2 WEST8 products before that and have visited their Sapporo shop for over 10 years, but now the brand's outdoorsy concept fits my lifestyle more than ever. I currently go trekking and camping four times a month at the most. SOUTH2 WEST8 designs fully-functional clothes in colors and patterns that can never be seen in authentic outdoor brands. As a fashion lover, I really like that.”
- Hinata has been broadening his range of creative activities, as he recently produced a signature model amplifier in collaboration with his favorite British manufacturer, ORANGE, while establishing his own apparel brand, bocco. And, many of products he has created feature a Chinese character, 極, in the name or design.
- “極 means ‘to reach the top’ or ‘to master skills’, and that is what I always value the most. I want to fully pursue a thing until mastering it. It’s not just for my career but also for my hobbies like mountain climbing and fashion. I really enjoyed Tenkara fishing I tried for the first time for this issue, and already become eager to master it (laughs).”
Hidekazu Hinata was born on December 4th, 1976, in Tokyo. His nickname is Hinatch. After debut as a member of ART-SCHOOL in 2002 and then joined in ZAZEN BOYS, he currently plays as a member of some bands, including STRAIGHTENER and Nothing's Carved In Stone. He also works as a studio musician for Kenshi Yonezu, TK from Ling tosite sigure, MIYAVI and many others. In recent years, he actively plays for HHMM, an improvisation unit he formed with drummer Masanao Matsushita. Hitana is now touring across Japan for STRAIGHTENER’s Silver Lining Tour.
