完全に利活用されないエゾシカ
- 海外を旅をしていた学生時代、髙橋さんは行く先々で現地の民芸品に魅了された。その後、札幌にあった雑貨店「ocho」に勤め始め、海外での買い付けに同行する機会に恵まれるようになった。
- 「主に行っていたのはメキシコです。その文化や色使いから影響を受けました。グアテマラまで南下すると、原住民の貴重な手仕事を間近に見ることもできて」
- ２０年ほど前、その雑貨店のオーナーから革細工の道具一式 を譲り受けた。それまで蓄積してきた民芸への思いが重なり、独学のレザークラフトづくりが始まったのだった。
- 「道具と一緒に『LEATHER BRAIDING』という編み方の本もいただいて。いまだにページを捲る私のバイブルですね」
- お店の顧客からバッグやアクセサリーのオーダーが増えてきた頃と同時期に、北海道ではある動物による獣害が増え始めていた。それは〈amarillo〉を語る上で欠かせないエゾシカだ。
- 「農作物や樹木への被害を防ぐために、エゾシカを狩猟しなければいけなくなって。ジビエが少しずつ浸透したことで鹿肉は食べられるようになったけど、皮や角はほとんど捨てられていました。そこでエゾシカの皮を革にして活用する取り組みが始まったんですね。初めの頃は試作の革を使わせてもらっていましたが、いまはエゾプロダクトさんご協力の元、質の高い鹿革を提供していただいています」
完全に利活用されないエゾシカ
ユニークさとシンプルさの合理的な追求
- 鹿革は軽くて丈夫。その特性から加工や装飾がしやすく、さまざまな工芸に用いられるが、〈amarillo〉が使うのはエゾシカ一択である。北海道では年間１０〜１４万頭のエゾシカが捕獲されるが、革製品に利用されるのはそのうちの１割に満たないという。つまり、エゾシカの革自体が極めて貴重な材料なのだ。また、野生の鹿革には角ズレや虫刺されなどによるキズも多数ある。それらを風合いとして活かしながら、パーツ毎に吟味して最大限に利用するのが髙橋さんの流儀。それは〈NEEDLES〉とのコラボレーションにも表れている。
- 「傷の多いものは紐、キレイなものはボディ、と手間をかけて選定しながら仕上げていく。それはハンドメイドの良さですね。今回はNEEDLESさんからデザインのアイデアをいただいて、私がそこに何かエッセンスを入れて、すこし“はみ出た”ものをつくりました」
- レザークラフトには欠かせない「編み」と「かがり」の技術も〈amarillo〉の真骨頂だ。鹿革の特性と伝統的な技法に、髙橋さんならではの紐の始末の仕方、編み込みを施す位置、レザーカラーリング、ビーズの選定などのユニークさが相まって、プリミティブかつエレガントなレザークラフトが誕生した。
- 「フリンジバッグは特徴的な編み込み、サコッシュは花をモチーフにしたボタンのあしらい、ネックレスは鮮やかなパープルのタンニン鞣しにこだわっていて。革紐に通せるビーズは限られているけど、ユニークなものを選んでいます。ネパールのシルバーやアフリカの民族モノ、レコード盤をリサイクルしたものもありますね」
- 技法のユニークさとデザインのシンプルさを合理的に追求していく。オリジナリティを表現する上で、髙橋さんは新たなチャレンジを見据えている。
- 「ヌメ革だけの個展をやってみたいです。質感が馴染むと飴色になっていく経年変化はヌメ革だからこそ。もうひとつ、ナイロンの糸を使っているけど、アイヌの職人さんから昔はエゾシカの腱を糸の代わりにしていたことを教えていただいて、試してみたいと思っています。100％エゾシカで作品を組み立てる。もっと原始的な、時代に逆行するものづくりに興味があります」

デザイナー・髙橋愛梨による201２年にスタートしたレザークラフトブランド。一枚の革からハサミで切り出した革紐を使った「編み」と「かがり」によるハンドメイドを特徴とし、近年北海道で急増し狩猟されるエゾシカの利活用のため、エゾシカ革を用いた作品づくりに取り組んでいる。
A leather crafting brand established by designer Airi Takahashi in 2012. Each of the brand’s products is handcrafted with braided and stitched leather strings scissor-cut out of a single piece of leather. The brand has currently been making more pieces made of Yezo sika deerskin to utilize the animal after being hunted because the population has sharply increased in Hokkaido in recent years.

Unutilized Yezo Sika Deer
- Takahashi used to travel overseas during her college days and got fascinated by local folk crafts. She later got a job at ocho, a variety shop in Sapporo, and found opportunities to accompany the staff on their buying trip.
- “We mainly traveled to Mexico. The culture and colors seen in the country inspired me a lot. When we went to deeper south to Guatemala, we could have a chance to see how the natives actually handcrafted their work with our own eyes.” About 20 years ago, the owner of the shop gave her a set of leather crafting tools. Together with her love of handicrafts, it made her start studying the craft for herself.
- “The owner gave me a book titled ‘LEATHER BRAIDING’ together with the tools. It is a book about braiding techniques and became my bible. I still refer it.”
- At almost the same time as she began to get more orders to make bags and accessories from the shop’s customers, the number of damages caused by Yezo sika deer grew in Hokkaido. That animal is now essential when talking about amarillo.
- “We came to need to hunt Yezo sika deer to avoid serious damage on crops and forests. Although people now eat more deer as wild game dishes become known in Japan, skins and antlers were mostly just thrown away at that time. That is why a project to produce deerskin from Yezo sika deer started. At the beginning, I could have some chances to use the prototype leather. Now EZOPRO supports me to obtain quality deerskin.”
Reasonably Pursuing Uniqueness and Simplicity
- Because durable and lightweight deerskin is easy to handle and decorate, it has been utilized for various crafts. Unlike other brands, amarillo uses only Yezo sika deerskin for their products. About 100,000 to 140,000 Yezo sika deer are hunted every year, but less than only 10% of them are used for leather crafting. The ratio shows that the material is quite rare in the market. Although wild deerskin has a lot of scars from antlers and bug bites, Takahashi always tries to make the best use of them as a part of texture and carefully consider what piece she would make out of the leather. Her such philosophy is reflected also on products she made for NEEDLES.
- “I would use damaged parts for strings and flawless parts for main sections. It takes me lots of time and effort to sort that, but it’s the advantage of handicraft. For our collaboration, NEEDLES gave me some design ideas beforehand and I then put my‘essence’into them to create a little ‘misfitting’ things.”
- Braiding and stitching, vital techniques for leather crafting, are also what characterize amarillo. Takahashi’s primitive yet elegant leather crafts can be made only by merging unique deerskin leather and traditional skills with her distinctive way of finishing string end, choosing where to place braids and selecting colors and beads.
- “The fringe bag should feature characteristic braids and the sacoche needs to be decorated with flower-shaped buttons. And vegetable tanned leather in vivid purple has to be used for the necklace. Types of beads that can be threaded onto a leather string are limited, but I try to use unique ones such as silver pieces from Nepal, African tribal stuff and even recycled ones made of records.”
- Takahashi reasonably pursues uniqueness in techniques and simplicity in design. While expressing her individuality, she looks ahead new challenges.
- “I want to hold a solo exhibition only with products made of vegetable tanned leather. The surface color of the material changes to amber as the texture gets softer with time. It happens only on vegetable tanned leather. And one more thing. An Ainu craftsman taught me that they used to use Yezo sika tendons instead of nylon threads we use now. I’d like to try that to make a product purely made by Yezo sika deer. What interests me is such a primitive way of crafting that goes against the times.”
