『サマー・オブ・ソウル（あるいは、革命がテレビ放映されなかった時）』は１９６９年の夏、ニューヨーク・ハーレムの公園に３０万人を集めた幻の音楽フェス「ハーレム・カルチュラル・フェスティバル」を題材にしたドキュメンタリー。ニーナ・シモンやスライ＆ザ・ファミリー・ストーンをはじめとした錚々たるアーティストのパフォーマンスや、繰り返し語られる「誇り高きブラックになれ」というメッセージが胸を打つと同時に、当時の最先端のファッションを観るのもすごく楽しい作品です。ステージに立つ出演者たちの衣装はもちろん、スーツやアフリカンスタイルのカラフルな服を思い思いに着こなす観客もめちゃくちゃカッコいいんですよね。私自身、たとえば〈NEEDLES〉のアイテムでもクラシックなデザインだったり、ヴィヴィッドな柄や色を選びがちなんですが、そういった好みが何から影響を受けたものなのか、そこまで深く考えたことがなかったんです。でもこの映画を観て、自分のファッションのルーツが音楽と同じでこの時代のブラックカルチャーにあったことを実感しました。

Movies are a mirror of the times and have been closely tied to fashion. Just as there are movies, where we like the story and the actors so much, that we watch again and again. There are also movies with costumes unforgettably fascinating. Nepenthes is keen to know of the works that became fashion inspirations to the visionaries. In this issue, we invited 10 creators to reveal and reminisce their encounter with movies and fashion.
Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) is a documentary about the Harlem Cultural Festival, a visionary music festival that attracted 300,000 people to a park in Harlem, New York, in the summer of 1969. The performances by Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone, and many other prominent artists, and the repeated message of “being black and proud” were moving; at the same time, the cutting-edge fashion of the time was a joy to watch. Not only the costumes of the performers on stage, but also the spectators in their suits and colorful clothes with African textiles were insanely cool. I myself tend to choose classic designs or vivid patterns and colors, even from Needles for example, however I had never really contemplated about what influenced my tastes. But after watching this film, I felt like black culture from this generation was actually a huge impact on my music and fashion.
